Tallulah Bankhead (1902–1968) was an American stage and screen actor celebrated as much for her extravagant personality, husky voice, wit and scandalous independence as for her performances. At a time when women were expected to occupy considerably smaller spaces, Bankhead cultivated something larger: theatrical, excessive, funny, sexy, audacious, and magnificently authentic.
